Judge Alan D. Marrus dedicated more than 30 years of service as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, during which he presided over more than 650 trials and ruled on significant criminal cases, and has been a prominent legal voice and consultant across the media landscape. In addition, he has lectured, run seminars, and appeared in the Netflix documentary series “Who Killed Malcolm X?” Upon retiring from this prestigious position as one of the most beloved judges in the state, he joined his wife in launching Judges for Love, Inc. in 2017. The award-winning and renowned company provides Supreme Court justices as officiants for interfaith, non-religious, and gay couples seeking a meaningful civil wedding ceremony that suits their needs, as well as those renewing their vows; the 13 judges who perform the ceremonies not only wield legal prowess attained over the course of their accomplished careers but make sure the occasion is personalized, customized, unique, and memorable. One of the primary officiants, Mr. Marrus consults with couples in the early stages and guides them through the process, as well as performs weddings in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington D.C., and Virginia—providing ceremonies that are, according to testimonials, “eloquent, dignified and warm with the perfect touch of humor.”
Attributing his success to working with people who appreciated his work, Mr. Marrus has excelled in the legal field as an assistant district attorney for the Kings County Office of the District Attorney from 1971 to 1974 and subsequently moved to the New York State Office of Prosecutorial Services, where he served as an assistant executive director. He then found success as the New York State Appellate Reference Service from 1975 to 1977 and afterward became chief of the Appeals Bureau of the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office. He was appointed to the bench by former Mayor Edward Koch and became an Acting Supreme Court Justice in 1986. An incredibly prolific trial judge acclaimed by the press as “one of the best judges in New York,” he presided over countless cases—among the most notable being that of serial killer Salvatore Perrone, who was convicted by a jury of three murders; Mr. Marrus was the judge who sentenced Perrone, as recently seen in the Oxygen Network series “Mark of a Killer.”
Outside of his judicial responsibilities, Mr. Marrus has demonstrated his winning personality and sense of humor as the host of a television show, the master of ceremonies at numerous comedy clubs, and a musical comedy performer at the Friars’ Club in New York City. Looking toward the future, his goal is to expand the group of people for whom he can officiate weddings and continue to impact the lives of newly married couples. He has remained in touch with several couples he performed the ceremonies for, all expressing gratitude for playing an integral role in the most important day of their lives together. With his wife, who predominantly runs the business, he loves spending time with their five grandchildren and dog.
